The official list gives addresses, not views, so the useful questions are which side of the monument you sleep on, how you reach the gate before dawn and what to do the evening before.

What the official hotel list tells you, and what it does not

The tourism department of Uttar Pradesh says Agra has more than 350 hotels, and it publishes a list with each hotel's address, room count and tariff range.1 That list is useful for locating a property, and it is silent on a view. Nothing on it says a window faces the marble. A hotel that advertises a Taj Mahal view is making its own claim, so confirm the room, the floor and the direction with the hotel before you pay.

The category column is more helpful. The list marks Amar Vilas as 5*D, a five-star deluxe property.3 The same convention appears for other entries, so a search for 5 star hotels in Agra with a Taj Mahal view starts with the list's star codes and then moves to the hotel's own pages for the room-level detail.3 Treat the tariff column as a range from the list and not as a quote, since rates change by date and room.

A room with a view is nice to have, but it is not what makes a sunrise visit work. What makes it work is the gate: the ticket windows open one hour before sunrise, and the monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise.8,9 For luxury travel built around a Taj Mahal sunrise, choose the hotel for the distance to that gate and for a driver who will be waiting, and treat a rooftop sight of the dome as a bonus.

Which side of the monument to sleep on

The eastern gate is the one the official entry page suggests to avoid crowds, and it faces the Taj Nature Walk and Fatehabad town.14,15 The list places Amar Vilas at the Eastern Gate Taj Mahal and the Radisson on the Taj Mahal East gate road.2,16 A hotel on this side puts you near the gate with the shorter queue in the official advice.

Fatehabad Road is where a cluster of the larger names sits. The list gives ITC Mughal, Jaypee Palace, Trident Hilton and Man Singh Palace the same road.4,5,17,18 A stay there means a short drive to the gate in the morning, so ask the hotel which entrance its drivers use. Parking for the eastern gate is at Shilpgram, and polluting vehicles are barred within 500 meters of the monument.19

The western gate is the main entrance, and it faces the Agra cantonment and the city.20 The list puts Clarks Shiraz on Taj Road.21 The southern gate is exit-only at present, so a room that looks close on the map is not necessarily close to a gate you can use.22 Pick the side by the gate your guide or driver will use, and ask them before you book.

The evening before the sunrise

Agra Fort runs a light and sound show every day, in Hindi from 6:30 pm to 7:15 pm and in English from 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm.7 It covers 5,000 years of the city's history in 45 minutes, and each show seats 300 people on a first come first served basis.26,27 The English show ends early enough to leave a whole night before a dawn start.

For a quieter evening, the river is the alternative. The Agra Development Authority viewpoint near Mehtab Bagh shows the Taj on Fridays and full moon nights, and the official page describes the monument there as golden in the evening.11,10 The official list of top views describes Mehtab Bagh as the Moonlight Garden.28 Couples often choose this spot for the last light of the day before an early night.

If the dates fall right, there is a rarer option. Night viewing is offered on five days a month around the full moon, in half-hour batches, and it is closed on Fridays and in the month of Ramzan.29,30,31 It does not combine well with a pre-dawn start, so pick one or the other for the same night. The full moon page of this guide explains the batches and the rules.

Reaching the gate in the dark

Local transport in Agra covers taxis, tempos, auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws, and prepaid taxis are available.12 For a pre-dawn visit, arrange the ride the evening before and agree the meeting time with the hotel front desk. A hotel driver knows which gate to use, and a booked car avoids the search for a rickshaw in the dark.

From the parking area to the gate, battery buses and golf carts run.38 The distance you walk at the end depends on where you are dropped, so ask for the parking area of the gate you will use. Remember that big bags slow the security check, so leave them in the room.36 Water is allowed inside, and food is not.39,40

Agra's airport is around 7 km from the city center, and the main railway station is Agra Cantonment.41,24 If you arrive late the night before, a hotel near the station or on the Taj Road side saves you a long transfer. A sunrise visit is easier on a full night of sleep than on a late arrival and an early alarm, so schedule the arrival in the afternoon where you can.

Couples, and the luxury question

A couple planning a Taj Mahal sunrise for two can pair an east-side room with the river view, and the plan is easy to build. The monument is described as pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines.25 A room on the east side lets you walk to the gate at first light, and the river viewpoint gives you a golden evening. Together they cover the colors the official site describes, in a single stay.

Luxury here means time more than marble. A stay that puts a hotel car at the door at the right moment, an early breakfast arranged the night before and a guide waiting at the gate removes the friction that the pre-dawn hours add. The official list gives a range of tariffs for each hotel, so use it as a rough guide to where a property sits, and then get a current quote.

Whatever you choose, keep the Friday closure in mind. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, and night viewing is closed too.37,31 A couple who arrive on a Thursday evening and plan a Friday sunrise will find the gates shut, so build the stay around a different morning and use Friday for the river viewpoint and Agra Fort.

Sleep in Agra, or drive from Delhi

The road distance from Agra to Delhi is given as 204 km.42 The sunrise day tour covers it with a pickup from 2:30 AM, 3 hours in the car and 3 hours at the Taj Mahal. That is the lowest-cost way to see the sunrise, and it needs no hotel. Its cost is sleep, and the day runs from 6 to 12 hours depending on your pickup.

Sleeping in Agra changes the arithmetic. The 2 day listing from Delhi names the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, the Baby Taj and a sunset point behind the monument. Fatehpur Sikri is about 39 km from Agra and open from sunrise to sunset every day.43 An overnight stay turns a day trip with a long drive into relaxed days with a sunset and a sunrise.

Both formats offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so you can hold a place and watch the forecast. If you want a hotel with a view, book it on its own terms and use our guide pages to set the plan. If you want a single booking that handles pickup, guide and timing, the sunrise day tour is the more direct way to a first light at the gate.
