Book a spotAfter dark the monument opens only on five nights a month, in half-hour batches of 50 people. Here is how a night visit works, what the official pages disagree on and what to carry.

Key facts
The official pages describe the Taj Mahal after dark in terms of the moon and not in terms of lamps. The tourism department's FAQ calls a night visit the silhouette of the structure against the dark sky and moonlight, full of peace and magic.6 Its homepage says the Taj is golden when the moon shines.7 Visitors who ask whether the Taj Mahal lights up at night are best served by the moon calendar, not a switch.
That is why night viewing is tied to the full moon. The program offers five nights a month: the full moon night, the two nights before it and the two nights after.1 On the dark nights in between, the monument is closed to visitors after its daytime hours, which end 30 minutes before sunset.8 The pages do not give a reason for the arrangement, and a visitor should not invent one.
A different night show exists in Agra, and it is easy to confuse with the Taj. The light and sound show runs at Agra Fort, in Hindi from 6:30 pm to 7:15 pm and in English from 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm every day.9 If you were looking for the Taj Mahal light and sound show timings, those are the fort's. The monument itself has no such show in the official pages.

Both pages are printed as found; where the clocks differ, the time on your own ticket decides.
Night viewing runs from 20:00 to 23:59 in 8 batches of at most 50 people each, and each batch lasts half an hour.2,3 The FAQ puts the nightly maximum at 400 visitors, divided into those 8 batches.14 It is a small, timed group visit, more like a booked slot than a stroll, and the ticket names your slot.
Before the slot comes the check-in. Visitors report at Shilpgram, near the eastern gate, half an hour before the viewing time printed on the ticket, for the security checks.4 The Archaeological Survey adds that entry is through the eastern gate only, after the security check near it.12 Allow time to get to Shilpgram in the dark, and keep your ID in your hand.
Everyone must carry identification. The night-view page says every visitor needs ID during the visit.11 The Archaeological Survey page lists the documents for buying a ticket: a copy of address proof and ID proof for Indian visitors, and a copy of the passport for foreign visitors.15 Bring the originals and a copy to the counter, because the ticket is checked against the name.
Two official sources describe the same program with different clocks. The tourism department gives the slots as 20:00 to 23:59.2 The Archaeological Survey, which looks after the monument, writes 8:30 pm to 12:30 in eight batches of 50 for half an hour.18 The batch size and the half-hour length agree, and the start and end times do not, so read the time on your own ticket.
Booking differs too. The FAQ says night tickets can be booked seven days before the viewing date through the Archaeological Survey's payment website.19 The Survey's visitor page says the tickets are sold at its Agra Circle office at 22 The Mall, between 10 am and 6 pm, one day in advance.20 The rules may have changed since either page was written, so check the current booking page before you plan the trip around a date.
The Survey page adds a cancellation rule. A night ticket can be cancelled at the same counter on the day of viewing up to 12 noon, with a charge of 25% of the ticket.23 It also says the night program began on 28 November 2004 under an order of the Supreme Court of India, for five nights a month, except Fridays and Ramzan.17 If a date on your trip falls inside the window, treat the ticket as a firm commitment.

The night rules are stricter than the day rules. Mobile phones are banned, video cameras and extra batteries are prohibited, and a still camera is permitted after the security check.22 The Survey page says the visitors keep their luggage at a counter free of cost, and that no video camera is allowed inside during the night viewing.10 Travel light, with your camera body and nothing else you cannot hand over.
The general list of prohibited items applies as well: arms, smoking items, liquor, headphones, knives, wire, mobile chargers and tripods are on it.35 Drone cameras are strictly prohibited in and around the Taj Mahal, and eatables are not allowed inside.37,36 Photography is prohibited inside the main mausoleum, and that rule holds at night as well as by day.38
The practical result is a short, quiet visit with few distractions. Without a phone, you will not be filming or messaging. The official line is that a still camera is permitted, so a camera with a good sensor and a steady hand, but no tripod, is the kit to choose. Keep your voice low, as the official page asks visitors not to make noise inside the mausoleum.39

The night-view page lists adult tickets at Rs 510 for Indian visitors and Rs 750 for foreign visitors, and Rs 500 for a child of 3 to 15 years.40 These are the figures printed on that page, which also carries older full moon dates, so check the current price at booking. The daytime fees on the official ticketing page are a separate schedule and have a different structure.
The closed days matter. Night viewing is closed every Friday and in the month of Ramzan.5 The Survey repeats this, and notes that the five nights exclude Fridays.17 A full moon that falls on a Friday, or inside Ramzan, therefore gives no night visit that month, and a trip planned only around that date has no fallback. Build the trip so that several of the nights fit your dates.
The day schedule has its own closure. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays by day as well.13 If your only free evening is a Friday, the Mehtab Bagh viewpoint is the alternative, because the official page says the Taj can be seen from that point on Fridays and on full moon nights.21 It is not the same as walking the garden, but it keeps the moon in view.

the silhouette of the structure against the dark sky and moonlight is full of peace and magic.
The river viewpoint is the easiest substitute. The Agra Development Authority built the point on the Yamuna bank near Mehtab Bagh for a panoramic view of the Taj.30 The official top views list names Mehtab Bagh, the Moonlight Garden, and also lists the view of the Taj on a full moon night.41 It needs no batch and no check-in at Shilpgram.
A booked evening tour is another way. The sunset listing runs 4 to 5 hours as a private group with a live English guide, and its highlights name the sunset view of the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh and night photography in Agra. It does not take you inside the monument at night, which only the program above allows, but it fills the evening with sights and a guide.
Finally, the day itself offers a choice. The visiting hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset, so the best light of a daytime visit is at the edges.8 If the moon calendar does not suit your dates, a sunrise visit gives the pink side of the monument that the night program cannot. The sunrise-or-sunset guide in this set compares the early and late hours in detail.
