A cool-season dawn, inside the official October to March best season.23

Sunrise is worked out for the Taj Mahal's coordinates on the 15th of each month on Indian time. No weather station lies in range of Agra, so no temperatures are shown; the notes come from the tourism department's pages.

The sun rises at its own hour, but the gates keep a schedule built around it. Here is how the dawn timetable works, what the light does and how to plan your morning around it.

What the gate schedule is built around

The Taj Mahal does not open at a fixed clock time. The Uttar Pradesh tourism department says it opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset on normal operating days, and Incredible India, the national tourism brand, gives the same rule.1,6 Everything about a Taj Mahal sunrise time follows from that single sentence: the gate moves with the sun, so the hour on your watch moves with the calendar.

The ticket windows follow the same logic with a longer lead. The tourism department says the windows at the east and west gates open one hour before sunrise and close 45 minutes before sunset.2,7,8 So the order at dawn is always the same: ticket windows first, gate half an hour before the sun comes up, then the sun itself. If you hold an e-ticket, the window is the one step you can skip.9

That is why a quoted "opening time" on a booking page is only half an answer. What you need is the sunrise hour for your date, which the sun tool above works out from Agra's position, and then a little arithmetic. Subtract 30 minutes for the gate, or an hour if you still need to buy a ticket at the gate. The rest of this page is about what that early start buys you and how to use it well.

The rules are set against sunrise and sunset, so the clock hour moves with the season; the sun tool above shows the hour for each month.2

Why the sunrise time in Agra moves your whole morning

Sunrise time in Agra swings a long way between midsummer and midwinter, because Agra sits in the northern plains with long summer days and short winter ones. The same gate rule therefore puts you on the pavement at very different clock hours in June and in December. In summer the first light arrives so early that the queue forms in the dark; in winter it arrives later, but the mornings are cold and often misty.

Treat the sun tool above as your planner. Pick the month, read the sunrise hour, subtract 30 minutes for the gate, and then subtract your travel time from the hotel or from the car park. The tool uses the monument's own coordinates and assumes no weather, so leave yourself a margin for traffic on the way in. Roads near the monument are limited, as no polluting vehicles are allowed within 500 metres, and that shapes the last stretch of the journey.13

If your tour starts in Delhi, the sunrise hour decides your pickup time too. Our own listing lets you choose a pickup between 2:30 AM and 10:00 AM, and 2:30 AM is the choice for the sunrise visit. The listing gives the drive from Delhi as 3 hours, which is why a dawn arrival means a very early alarm. The sunrise tour page walks through that early start in detail, because the alarm, not the monument, is the hard part of the day.

Each bar counts minutes against sunrise or sunset, as the tourism department states the gate and ticket rules.1,2

How the light changes in the first hour

The tourism department describes the Taj as a monument of moods. It looks milky white in the soft light of early morning, glistens in the overhead sun in the afternoon and appears again under the night sky when the moon lights it.12 A second page on the same site says the Taj is pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines, with shades in between across the hours and the seasons.4

Mist is part of the picture on many mornings. The department calls the Taj most alluring in the relative quiet of early morning, shrouded in mists and bathed in a soft red glow.5 That is an official description of a look, not a promise of weather: some mornings are crisp and clear, others are soft and grey, and the monument is worth seeing in both. Bring patience, because the colour changes quickly once the sun clears the horizon.

Another reason people choose dawn is practical. The department says most tourists prefer sunrise because the twilight gilds the monument with pink, and adds that early morning avoids both the summer heat and the crowds.11 The same page says a sunset visit has cooler temperatures and softer silver light, with usually more visitors than at sunrise.18 Neither is wrong, but if you want the quietest marble, the early gate is the one.

Pick your dawn

Match the plan to your priority

Say what matters most and see which part of the dawn timetable fits.

  • If I want the pink first light

    Be inside at sunrise

The department says most tourists prefer sunrise for its pink twilight.11

  • If I hate ticket queues

    Buy an e-ticket first

The ASI ticketing sites sell e-tickets to foreign and domestic visitors.9

  • If I want fewer people in view

    Start at the east gate

The official gate note says to prefer it to avoid the crowd.14

  • If My only free morning is Friday

    Use the river viewpoint

The Taj is shut on Fridays, but the viewpoint is open every day.3,16

  • If I can only arrive after sunrise

    You can still enter

The gate stays open until 30 minutes before sunset.1

A realistic morning, from car park to gate

Plan the approach, not just the arrival. The tourism department says no polluting vehicles are allowed within 500 metres of the Taj Mahal, with parking at Shilpgram for the east gate and at Amrood ka Teela for the west gate.13 From the parking areas, battery buses and golf carts run to the gate.20 Allow time for that last leg, even on an empty morning, because it adds a few minutes that the sun will not wait for.

Then comes the queue, and the west gate is the main entrance, facing Agra city.15 There are separate queues for foreign and domestic tourists, and signs direct each group.10 The department also asks visitors to avoid big bags and books, because they may increase the security check time.21 A small bag, a ticket on your phone and a photo ID will move you through faster than anything else you can do. Every visitor is asked to carry an identity proof issued by the authorities.19

Once inside, the sensible plan is to walk straight toward the main gateway and the long garden before stopping for photographs. The mausoleum is at the northern end of the complex, with greenery and fountains between it and the gateways, so the view opens as soon as you pass through.22 Save the slow walk for after the first view; the colour is at its softest in the opening minutes, and the crowd thickens steadily once the other tickets are scanned.

Visitors with tickets can enter, foreign and domestic queues kept separate.1,10

  3. Sunrise

  4. Early morning

Mist and a soft red glow

The Taj is at its most alluring in the quiet of the morning.5

  5. Afternoon

Taj Mahal sunrise in winter, summer and the shoulder months

The tourism department gives October to March as the best season to visit, and says most tourists come in the cooler months of October, November and February.23,24 Winter is when the Taj Mahal sunrise in winter shows its softest side, with a cool dawn and the chance of mist. It is also the season when the crowd is heaviest, so the early gate matters more, not less, and it is worth knowing that before you choose a date.

Summer works differently. The department notes that visiting in the early morning avoids the summer heat as well as the crowds, which is a polite way of saying the middle of a hot day is hard going on open marble.11 In the hottest months the early gate is the comfortable choice rather than only the photogenic one, and the monument is quieter. Plan to leave before the sun is high, and carry water, which is allowed inside.25

The shoulder months are a matter of trade-offs. You will find fewer people in them than in the peak winter weeks, and a sunrise that is less likely to be veiled, but also warmer afternoons, so check the forecast in the week before you travel. Our pages on crowds and the best season go month by month. For the sunrise itself, the rule of the gate stays the same all year: 30 minutes before the sun, every day except Friday.1,3

If your sunrise morning is a Friday

Friday is the one day with no general viewing. The tourism department says the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for general viewing, while the other days it is always open, and Incredible India lists the same closure.3,6 That sounds like a small footnote until it lands in the middle of a short trip, at which point it decides which morning you have, so settle the day of the week first and let the rest of the itinerary fall into place around it.

There is a useful fallback. The Agra Development Authority runs a viewpoint on the bank of the Yamuna near Mehtab Bagh, and the tourism department says the Taj can be seen from it on Fridays and full moon nights, with hours from sunrise to 12.00 midnight every day and a view that is golden in the morning.16,17 It does not replace walking through the gateway, but it gives a real sunrise view of the monument on the one day the grounds are shut. Our page on Mehtab Bagh covers it.

A sunrise day tour is also a quiet way around the problem. Our listing's own notes say the interior is closed every Friday for prayer and that a riverside viewpoint is offered instead. If you can choose the weekday, take any day but Friday. If you cannot, a viewpoint morning followed by Agra Fort, which keeps its own hours, is a fair second best. Either way, check the day of the week before you book anything else.
