  • Sun sets around 17:44

Sunset comes early, and the ticket windows shut 45 minutes before it.3

Sunrise and sunset are worked out for the Taj Mahal's coordinates on the 15th of each month on Indian time. No weather station lies in range of Agra, so no temperatures are shown; the notes restate the tourism department's hours.

Hours at the Taj Mahal follow the sun, not the clock, and one day a week the grounds stay shut. Here is what opens when, which window closes first and what is open on a Friday.

The rule behind every Taj Mahal closing time

Ask a handful of websites for the Taj Mahal closing time and you will get a handful of clock hours, all of them wrong for part of the year. The reason is that the monument does not run on the clock. The Uttar Pradesh tourism department says it opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset on normal operating days, and Incredible India states the same rule.1,7 The closing hour moves through the seasons exactly as sunset does.

The ticket windows follow the sun as well, but they stop earlier than the gate. The department says the windows at the east and west gates open one hour before sunrise and close 45 minutes before sunset.3 That gap matters if you plan to buy at the gate: the grounds may stay open for another quarter of an hour, but nobody is selling tickets any more. The official pages do not name a separate last-entry hour, so treat the closing of the windows as your cut-off.

Use the sun tool above to turn the rule into a clock time. Pick the month, read sunset, subtract 30 minutes for the grounds and 45 minutes for the windows, and write both numbers on the back of your ticket.1,3 That is all the arithmetic there is to Taj Mahal visit timing, and it is far more reliable than a figure copied from a blog that was true in a different month. For an evening visit, add a margin for the walk in from the parking area.

Friday, the one closed day

Is the Taj Mahal open every day? It is open every day except one, and that day is easy to miss on a packed itinerary. The tourism department says the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for general viewing and that on the other days it is always open, and a second page on the same site repeats that it remains closed only on Fridays, so there is no other regular closed day to plan around.2,8 Incredible India, the Ministry of Tourism's brand, lists the same weekly closure beside the hours.7

The official pages state the closure without a reason. Our own listing's notes add one: they say the interior is closed every Friday for prayer, and that the tour offers a riverside viewpoint instead. The listing is the operator's statement about its own day, not the tourism department's, so treat it as context rather than as a rule. What the department states plainly is the day of the week, and that is the only part that matters for planning, so build the rest of the trip around it.

A Friday should never be a surprise, but it often is, because a short trip is easy to build around the wrong weekday. Before you book a hotel in Agra, count the days and make sure the Taj morning does not land on the closed one. If you are travelling on a fixed schedule, such as a flight from Delhi, put the Taj on the day before or the day after and use Friday for something that is open, which is easy in Agra.

What stays open when the Taj Mahal is shut

The closure applies to the Taj Mahal, not to the city. The tourism department says all other monuments and tourist attractions in Agra are open throughout the week from sunrise to sunset.10 That includes Agra Fort, where the balconies of the pavilions give views of the Yamuna River and the Taj Mahal, which makes it a natural substitute for a Friday sightseeing day.12 Allow a full morning for it, since the fort is large and its walls are worth walking.

Entry fees reflect the day too. The department's fee table has a separate Friday column, and Agra Fort costs a foreign visitor Rs 650 on weekdays and Rs 600 on Fridays, against Rs 50 and Rs 40 for an Indian visitor.9 The same table shows the Taj Mahal as closed in its Friday column, so there is no Friday fee to find. The tickets page has the full table; the point here is that Friday is a normal day for most of the city.

For a view of the Taj itself, there is the river. The Agra Development Authority runs a viewpoint near Mehtab Bagh, open from sunrise to 12.00 midnight every day, and the tourism department says the Taj can be seen from it on Fridays and full moon nights.11 Its tickets run from Rs 50 to Rs 500, depending on the visitor and the hour.13 A Friday in Agra can therefore still include the monument, seen from across the water, with the interior kept for a different morning.

Plan the day

Match the hours to your trip

Say what your plan looks like and see which rule applies.

  • If My trip includes a Friday

Take the Taj on another day

The tourism department says it is closed on Fridays for general viewing.2

  • If I arrive in Agra on a Friday

Agra Fort and the river view

Other Agra monuments are open from sunrise to sunset all week.10

  • If I want a last look before dark

Be inside before the gate closes

The grounds close 30 minutes before sunset.1

  • If I want to buy a ticket at the gate

    Reach the window in time

The windows close 45 minutes before sunset.3

  • If I want the Taj by moonlight

    Book a night slot ahead

Night viewing runs five nights a month from 20:00.5,6

How long you can stay inside

The official pages do not set a stay limit for a day visit, and we found no published stay limit, so we will not invent one. What they say is that tourists are advised to stay inside the monument as directed on their tickets or by Archaeological Survey of India staff.15 In practice that means following the signs, the stewards and the queue for the main mausoleum, which needs a separate extra ticket of Rs 200 on top of the regular one.16

Most visitors plan around the building rather than the clock. The grounds are large and flat, the garden is long, and the marble is worth a slow walk from the gateway to the platform. If you also want the Taj Museum, which sits inside the complex, note that it opens from 10.00 AM to 5.0 PM and that entry is free.4 It follows its own hours rather than the sun's, so an early visit may finish before the museum even opens.

Heat, crowd and your own pace will set the real limit. Early morning is the cooler and quieter choice, and the tourism department says it avoids summer heat as well as the crowds, which is why dawn visits are so popular.17 Carry water, which the department says is allowed inside the monument, and keep an eye on the sun tool for the closing hour of your month.18 If you have booked a guide or a driver, agree a meeting time that leaves room for the walk back.

A day on the clock rules

What opens and shuts, in order

  1. 30 min before sunrise

    The grounds open

General viewing starts on every day except Friday.1,2

  2. 10.00 AM

    The Taj Museum opens

The museum inside the complex opens, with free entry.4

  3. 5.0 PM

    The Taj Museum closes

The museum keeps its own hours, not the sun's.4

  4. 45 min before sunset

    Ticket windows close

Gate sales stop at the east and west windows.3

  5. 30 min before sunset

    The grounds close

Everyone leaves the complex for the day.1

  6. 20:00

    Night viewing begins

Only on the five moon nights, in half-hour batches.6,5

Night viewing, the other opening hours

There is a second set of hours that most visitors never see on a first trip. Night viewing is available on five days a month: the full moon night, two nights before and two nights after.5 It runs from 20:00 to 23:59 in 8 batches of at most 50 people, each lasting half an hour, and visitors report half an hour before their slot at Shilpgram for security checks.6 It is a different experience from the daytime visit, quieter and slower, and it needs planning from the day you book your flights.

Tickets for those slots are booked ahead, not at the gate. The tourism department says night viewing tickets can be booked seven days before the viewing date on the Archaeological Survey of India payment site, and gives the charges as Rs 510 for a domestic tourist and Rs 750 per person for a foreigner.19,20 Every visitor must carry an ID, and the department says the list of prohibited items, together with mobile phones, applies at night too.21,22

The slots are few: the department says at most 400 tourists are allowed for night viewing, divided into 8 batches of 50.23 That makes the night visit the hardest ticket at the Taj, and a poor plan for a last-minute trip. Our full moon page covers the dates, the booking and what you see. For this page the takeaway is simple: the day hours and the night hours are separate systems, and a Friday does not change the night slots on a moon night.

Before you commit

A weekday and clock checklist

Pick the day3

  • Check the weekday: Friday is the closed day2
  • Read sunrise and sunset for your month in the sun tool above
  • Remember that gate ticket windows close 45 minutes before sunset3

If you miss it3

  • Walk Agra Fort, open from sunrise to sunset all week10
  • See the river viewpoint, open until midnight11
  • Carry a photo ID wherever you go in the complex14

How to plan around the hours

Start with the weekday, then the sun. Check that your Taj morning is not a Friday, read the sunrise and sunset hours for your month in the sun tool above, and pick which end of the day you want. A morning visit means the gate rule of 30 minutes before sunrise, and the early gate suits hot months best; an evening visit means finishing before the grounds close 30 minutes before sunset.1 Everything else, from ticket choice to photo plans, hangs off those decisions.

If you are combining the Taj with other monuments, put the Taj first. It is the only one with a closed day, and it is the one where the early light is the point. Agra Fort and the other sites are open from sunrise to sunset all week, so they can absorb the delay if the morning runs long.10 A private day trip from Delhi is built that way: the Taj at sunrise, then the Fort, then the Baby Taj.

Finally, leave room for the unplanned. Hours on official pages can change, and a special occasion can alter access on a given day, so check the current hours before you travel. The tourism department's own site is the reference we use, and every claim on this page points back to it in the list of sources below. If something has changed since we last read it, the official page wins.
