How many people come, and when they come
The Uttar Pradesh tourism site gives the yearly total as 7 to 8 million visitors, with more than 0.8 million of them from overseas.1 The same sentence adds that most tourists visit in the cooler months of October, November and February. That is the closest the official pages come to a crowd calendar, and it leaves out a month-by-month count.
Within a day, the pattern is easier to read, and Taj Mahal sunrise visitors meet it first. UP Tourism says there are usually more visitors at sunset than at sunrise, and that visiting in the early morning avoids both the summer heat and the crowds.6,5 Sunrise tourists therefore arrive with the thinnest crowd of the day, even in a busy month, although the gates and the queues still fill soon after the monument opens.
The gates add their own rhythm. The ticket windows at the western and eastern gates open one hour before sunrise, and the monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise.7,8,9 Foreign and domestic visitors queue separately, and the official entry page suggests the eastern gate to avoid crowds.10,11 Being in the right line at the right hour matters more than the month.

Ranges are as listed by Incredible India for the city; visitor notes come from the UP Tourism pages. The official pages give no monthly visitor counts.
The year in Agra, month by month
The Ministry of Tourism's Incredible India page for Agra lists a monthly temperature range for the city. January is listed at 4.1 to 27.7 °C and February at 6.7 to 31.7 °C.4,13 March reaches 10.1 to 38.6 °C, and April 15.1 to 43.1 °C.14,19 The ranges give the shape of the year, and they describe the city, not the minute you stand at the gate.
The peak comes in the early summer. May is listed at 20.5 to 46.1 °C and June at 20.8 to 46.0 °C.3,15 July is listed at 21.7 to 41.3 °C and August at 21.6 to 37.1 °C.16,17 Those are the months when an early visit counts most, because UP Tourism ties the early hour to avoiding the summer heat.5
The autumn and winter months are milder. September is listed at 20.7 to 37.4 °C and October at 14.8 to 37.5 °C.18,20 November is 9.4 to 33.2 °C and December 4.5 to 27.6 °C.21,12 The official FAQ names October to March as the best season to visit, and that is the stretch in which the temperature range sits lowest.2
The cool months bring the people
The season that suits your body is also the season everyone else picks. The official page names October, November and February as the months most tourists visit.1 Those months sit inside the October to March window that UP Tourism calls the best season.2 A visit in December, January or March falls in the same window, and the official pages give no count to say whether those months are quieter.
A traveler can use the early hour as the lever. The monument opens 30 minutes before sunrise, the ticket windows open one hour before sunrise, and an early visit avoids the crowds.9,7,5 If you travel in a busy month, plan to be at the gate when the windows open, and keep the first hour free for the monument rather than for breakfast or shopping.
On a Friday the crowd question disappears, because the monument is closed.22 The river viewpoint near Mehtab Bagh shows the Taj on Fridays and on full moon nights, and it is a back-up for a visitor whose dates collide with the closure.23 Treat Friday as a day for Agra Fort or the Baby Taj, and move the Taj Mahal to another morning of the week.
If I cannot stand heat
Come from October to March
UP Tourism names October to March as the best season.2
If I cannot stand crowds
Be there at the opening
An early visit avoids the crowds, and there are usually more visitors at sunset.5,6
If I must travel in May
Choose the dawn slot
May is listed at 20.5 to 46.1 °C.3
If I land on a Friday
Use the river viewpoint
The Taj is closed on Fridays and the viewpoint shows it that day.22,23
If I want mist and soft color
An early morning
The official page describes early morning shrouded in mists.24
Mist, and what the dawn actually looks like
Photographs of the Taj at dawn often show mist, and the official site does describe Taj Mahal sunrise mist in its own words. It calls the monument most alluring in the relative quiet of early morning, shrouded in mists and bathed with a soft red glow.24 That is a description of a good morning, and the site makes no promise of mist on a given date.
Mist can also hide the view. The official pages give no schedule for fog, visibility or smog, so a traveler should treat a hazy sunrise as one possibility among several and not as a guaranteed show. Keep a back-up in the plan: a later visit the same day, a second morning, or the river viewpoint on a day when the main gate is not open.
The color of the marble changes through the day, and the official pages note it. The Taj is described as pinkish in the morning, milky white in the evening and golden when the moon shines.27 An early visit catches the pink side, and a visit later in the day sees the white. If the dawn is grey, the afternoon light can still give the marble a glistening look.28
December to February
Cool and clear-headed
December is listed at 4.5 to 27.6 °C and February at 6.7 to 31.7 °C.12,13

Warming up
March is listed at 10.1 to 38.6 °C.14
April to June
The heat peak
May is listed at 20.5 to 46.1 °C and June at 20.8 to 46.0 °C.3,15
July and August
Still hot
July is listed at 21.7 to 41.3 °C and August at 21.6 to 37.1 °C.16,17
September
Easing
September is listed at 20.7 to 37.4 °C.18
October and November
Busy and mild
Most tourists come in October, November and February.1
Gates, queues and the day of the week
The eastern gate faces the Taj Nature Walk and Fatehabad town, and the official page says to prefer it to avoid crowds.11,29 The western gate is the main entrance and faces the cantonment and the city.30 The southern gate is exit-only at present.31 Two gates serve entry, and a good guide knows which one has the shorter line on the day.
Parking sits away from the monument. Polluting vehicles are barred within 500 meters, with parking at Shilpgram for the eastern gate and Amrood ka Teela for the western gate, and battery buses and golf carts run to the gates.32,33 A visitor should allow time for that last stretch in the crowd estimate, because the walk from the car to the queue is part of the morning.
Bags slow the line. The official page asks visitors to avoid big bags and books, since they lengthen the security check.25 A small bag, a water bottle and a camera make the quickest entry, and food, drones and tripods are not welcome.26,34,35,36 The simplest way to reduce the crowd you feel is to be light, early and in the right gate.

Choosing your month and your hour
If your dates are fixed, pick the hour. In the cool season, the early morning is a comfort choice and a way around the larger crowd. In the hot months, UP Tourism says an early visit avoids the summer heat as well.5 Either way, the opening times are the same, 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes before sunset.9
If your dates are flexible, the official pages narrow the choice only a little. They name October to March as the best season and October, November and February as the busiest months.2,1 A traveler who dislikes crowds and heat might look at the edges of the season and read the temperature ranges in the table above, then ask the tour operator what the crowd looked like in recent weeks.
Whatever the month, leave room in the plan. A sunrise tour from Delhi lets you pick a pickup from 2:30 AM to 10:00 AM, and it offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before. That flexibility is the practical answer to uncertain crowds, mist and weather: you can move the booking when the forecast changes, and still see the monument in the light you prefer.
